"We take the souls until our time of releasement has come."
A Reaper is known throughout history to be a skeleton that carries a scythe in a black cloak. When in reality, Reapers are male soul collectors for the Underworld. When war, plague, and famine became a constant of the world, bodies began to stack up with the souls of the dead trapped inside, causing these souls to blacken and become lost. Death overwhelmed the few workers under Hades control, so they told the lost souls if they were to fulfill a soul Quota, they would be able to finally cross the river Stix free of charge.
The lost souls, no longer wanting to be blackened and in pain, agreed to return to a human form and started to collect the vast amount of souls in limbo. These were the first Reapers. They each gained a scroll where the names of the souls they were to reap appeared with an estimated time of death and location. They learned that with a touch they could remove the souls from the soon to be deceased just before death. The Reapers would then take the soul to the Underworld to wait for its judgement. Despite not knowing how long their Soul Quota would be, it was made clear when they would reap their last soul.
When the final soul is collected on the Quota, that soul takes the place of the previous Reaper and must work on filling their own Quota. This ensures that every Reaper will see the rewards of the afterlife, but more importantly that Hades has balance in the Underworld once again. With the uncertainty on how long Reapers have to reap, they carry out the will of death itself.
ABILITIES
SOUL REMOVAL
Reapers have the ability to remove the soul of a body. The only time they should be doing this is to keep a soul from feeling the pain of their death. However, some have been known to break this rule when someone annoys them.
TELEPORTATION
Reapers can teleport anywhere instantly. This ability is needed to easily collect their soul Quota.
CHRONOKINESIS
Reapers are capable of stopping time within a twenty foot radius. It can only last a few moments and they can move about in this ‘bubble’ at a normal pace. This helps them collect a soul just before a person’s death.
PERCEPTION ALTERING
Reapers are capable of altering human perception to make themselves appear any way they wish, even invisible. This is usually done as a means of easier communication with the deceased, making their journey to the Underworld easier.
STRENGTHS
IMMORTALITY
Being death itself, there is no way to kill Reapers.
REGENERATION
Reapers can lose limbs and chunks of their body, but have it regrown in a matter of minutes.
ADVANTAGE OVER OTHERS
As Reapers are technically dead, many of the other species' abilities have no effect on them. An example would be their blood not being tempting to a sanguine. If a sanguine were to feed from a Reaper, the sanguine would fall ill for days.
WEAKNESSES
PHYSIQUE
Reapers have the strength they had at time of death. Since all reapers are human before becoming a reaper they have no greater strength than their human form.
SOUL QUOTA
Reapers have no idea when they will have earned their passage, so forming bonds and falling in love is risky because one day they will just disappear to the afterlife.
VULNERABILITY
Reapers are susceptible to other species' abilities, but not as powerful as they would be against a human, including- a magi's magic, a gypsy's illusion, a fae's magic, a sanguine's illusion, a drake's breath, and an eternal's affinity.
TRAITS
ETERNAL FAVOR
Being workers of Hades they carry a scythe tattoo that shows where their allegiance lies. This also gives them a new identity to be able to get jobs and survive in the human world.
APPEARANCE
They look as they did when they were human. Whatever wound, if one took their life, will appear as a scar in its place.
BECOMING A REAPER
One can only become a Reaper when they are the last soul in the prior Reaper’s quota.
MALES
All Reapers are male as Hades and the Matron of Banshees have an understanding.
COMMUNITY
Often Reapers are drawn to an Elder Reaper who can explain what their job is and gives them their scroll. They are also drawn to each other in groups of five because they all understand how and why they are what they are. It is not uncommon for Reapers to live together.
